Rights Respecting School

Castilion Primary School receives prestigious UNICEF UK Gold Award

Leaders / stakeholders have contributed to the school’s recent accreditation as a Gold Rights Respecting School. Leaders / stakeholders have been working with UNICEF UK since 2022. At this time, the school received the Bronze Rights Respecting Schools Award demonstrating a commitment to developing children’s rights in the school. In April 2024 the school received the Silver Rights Respecting Schools Award because children’s rights were developing rapidly across the school and community. In July 2025 the school became an accredited Gold Rights Respecting School.

The Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award is the highest accolade given by UNICEF UK and shows a deep and thorough commitment to children’s rights at all levels of school life. This award signifies that a school has fully integrated children's rights into its ethos, policies, and practices. It means the school demonstrates a deep understanding and commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) across all levels. This programme extends across the taught curriculum and offers wider opportunities to understand the world that pupils live in via the weekly assemblies and follow-up class work that pupils participate in. For example:  celebrating women’s day, understanding drought , recognising and exploring  significant historic events, for example women’s rights to vote, the experiences of wars and the impact of captivity (Auschwitz).  The articles enable pupils to explore key issues that could impact on them and their families questioning the experiences of others globally and causing pupils to consider the spiritual, moral, social and cultural beliefs and practices of others as well as themselves. Pupils learn respect for democracy, the rule of law, respect for individual liberty, and tolerance of others.

Castilion Primary School receives prestigious UNICEF UK Silver Award

The school has been working with UNICEF since September 2022. We celebrated our achievement in reaching Silver with a Silver Award Assembly on Wednesday 16th April 2024.

Castilion is a school where children’s rights are at the heart of our ethos and culture to improve well-being and to develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential as global citizens. As a school, we are working towards recognition as a ‘Rights Respecting School’ bronze, an award given to schools on behalf on Unicef UK.

The children have already learnt about their rights through assemblies and learning in class and are becoming very confident when talking about these.

What is a Rights Respecting School?

Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and young people and their rights. In 1989, governments across the world agreed that all children have the same rights by adopting the UN convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their full potential.

We believe the UNCRC reflects the beliefs of our school community, that our children receive their rights to a wonderful education and understand the responsibilities that they have to their communities as they grow in to confident, active and responsible citizens.

A Rights Respecting school models rights and respect in all relationships. Children learn about their rights by putting them into practice every day. The following rights are very important to Castilion school.
